The Visa Fees — Sponsor Fees
The DS-2019 form from a designated sponsor is mandatory. Sponsor fees typically cover application file preparation, DS-7002 training plan drafting, DS-2019 creation and issuance, pre-departure guidance, program monitoring, and ongoing support. Costs vary by sponsor/agency, ranging between $1,900 and $4,000 USD.
For J-2 dependents (spouse and children), costs range from $500 to $1,500 USD per dependent.
Mandatory Additional Fees
- Health Insurance: $50 to $150 USD/month (required by the U.S. Department of State)
- SEVIS Fee: $220 USD (paid to the U.S. government)
- MRV Fee: $185 USD (embassy/consulate appointment)
- Document Preparation: local printing and organizational costs
- On-site Workplace Visit (for companies with 25 or fewer employees): $280–$450 USD
- Dependent Health Insurance: $50 to $200 USD/month per dependent
- Travel to the Embassy: transportation, accommodation, food, and potential lost wages
Optional Service Fees
- Expedited Processing: $1,000 to $1,800 USD (3-4 business days instead of 10+)
- Placement Services: $1,200 to $1,800 USD (if you don't yet have a host company secured)
Who Pays?
Either you or your host company can pay the J-1 visa fees. Candidates typically cover the costs, though companies may contribute.

Flight tickets, housing deposits, advance rent, and first-month living expenses.
Living Costs
Ongoing rent, food, transportation, phone, and daily expenses. Additional costs apply when bringing family members.
